In this case study, we look at how Dalkia Aegis designed a CHP system that delivered reliable backup power for the Northern Maine Readiness Center (NMRC).

CHP systems save energy and cut carbon emissions by reusing the heat that is produced during electricity. The heat can be used for space heating, cooling, hot water and steam. A previous CHP system by Dalkia Aegis, EDF Group that Ballard had installed at the MEARNG’s Aviation Support Facility in Bangor, Maine, had powerful results:

A Propane-Powered Solution

So when it was time to break ground on the new Northern Maine Readiness Center (NMRC) in Presque Isle, Maine, Ballard turned again to Dalkia Aegis for a CHP solution. The NMRC will support the goals and needs of the Maine Army National Guard 185th Engineer Support Company (ESC), and Ballard had firsthand knowledge of how a CHP system could help.

“This is a wonderful machine,” Ballard said. “Dalkia Aegis’ CHP system produces electricity we don’t have to pay for, and heat we don’t have to pay for.”

Designed to meet LEED standards, the 45,000-square-foot facility provides versatile military program spaces for training, administration, locker rooms and vehicle maintenance. Because of the NMRC’s location, natural gas was not available to power the CHP. Fortunately, Dalkia Aegis had a solution—propane-powered CHP units.

As part of a comprehensive energy solution, Dalkia Aegis designed and installed two 10KW CP10WN units. The propane-powered CHP system was specifically designed to provide back-up power to the facility’s administrative offices. In addition to its energy-saving benefits, CHP also provides independence from aging power grids during power outages and severe weather (of which northern Maine has plenty).
